Northwest Area Livestock Judging Contest

By Teagan Charmasson

On Thursday January 21st, the Shattuck FFA livestock judging teams traveled to the Garfield County Fairground facilities in Enid to compete in the Northwest Area Livestock Judging Contest.  The competition is open to the 63 schools in the Northwest Area, and hosted approximately 200 FFA contestants. Competitors were split into a junior division (8-10th grades) and a senior division (8th-12th grades).  Shattuck competed with 9 students ranging in age from 8th grade to seniors. The Senior team, which consisted of Sydney Melton, Clayton Washmon and Jeronimo Lara, brought home the 1st Place banner.  One of Shattuck’s junior teams, with Jadyn Washmon, Cindy Lara, and Amanda Harbor, also placed 1st in their division.  The second junior team, Bela Herber, Allyn Goodson, and Caitlin Laverty, won 4th place in the Junior Division as well. These students have been working hard to not only increase their knowledge of livestock, but have been practicing their public speaking skills in order to be successful at presenting oral reasons.  Their hard work definitely paid off. Sydney Melton, just a Freshman at Shattuck High, had a great overall score, and won 2nd High Individual in the Senior Division. Bela Herber, also a freshman, placed 1st high individual in the junior division.  Great job to the competitors!
