SHATTUCK FFA SCHOOL YEAR COMES TO AN END

By Ezabela Herber

SHATTUCK, OKLAHOMA - Shattuck FFA wraps up the school year.  As the final weeks of school came to an end, the Shattuck FFA continued to stay busy till the very last day. April 22nd, we held our annual Plant Sale. We had a wide variety of options ranging from vegetables to hanging plants, to bedded plants. The greenhouse was open to the public from the 22nd all the way till the last day of school. Thank you to everyone who came out to support our local plant sale.

On April 20th, Michael & Amelia Adams came into the Shattuck Ag Ed classroom and taught students about bovine reproduction. We are so lucky to have local help when it comes to furthering education in our classrooms. A huge thank you to these two outstanding people and all that they do for our community.

On Thursday April 27th, 7 different schools from the Northwest area traveled to Shattuck to compete in our locally hosted Welding Rodeo. Over 50 students competed in this event. The contest consisted of 5 different categories which included mig welding, stick welding, torch cutting, tool ID and a written test. The participants were scored in each of these categories and the winner was the student earning the most points. Contestants were broken into either the junior or senior division based on grade level. The junior division winner was Brett Reasor, a freshman from Shattuck. The top 5 junior participants were, Brett Reasor—Shattuck, Cade Crowder—Shattuck, Cruz Hernandez—Shattuck, Hipolito Sarabia—Shattuck, and Luke Kelln—Shattuck. The senior division winner was Tate Charmasson, a junior from Shattuck. The top 5 senior participants were, Tate Charmasson —Shattuck, Josh Bay—Shattuck, Brody Patten—Woodward, Teton Dixon—Woodward, and

Colten Jones—Shattuck. Both winners received custom belt buckles.  Congratulations to all of the participants!

Monday May 1st, several Shattuck FFA members traveled to Tulsa to the 97th Annual Oklahoma State FFA Convention. Convention kicked off on Tuesday, and consisted of 6 general sessions over the course of two days. More than 15,000 were in attendance, and included every FFA Chapter in the state. Several Shattuck FFA members were honored at the convention; Senior, Karsen Stephens, was awarded his State FFA Degree, Sydney Melton placed third in the Goat Proficiency Contest, Ezabela Herber placed third in the Reporter’s Book Contest, and Shattuck FFA Alumni, Eric Quisenberry, was also awarded 3rd Place in the Ag Mechanics Design proficiency contest. Finally, Saige Moore and Siren Henry were chosen as members of the State FFA Chorus, which performed at each of the general sessions. This was the second year for the Oklahoma State FFA Convention to be held in Tulsa, and they will continue to host this event for at least the next four years. Congratulations to all state convention honorees!

On Thursday, May 5th, the food science class took a field trip to the neighboring town of Gage, Oklahoma to visit the Gage meat locker. In November of ‘22, they began caring for a set of pigs. At the Locker, they were able to watch one of their pigs being processed into retail cuts. We would like to thank Gary Wolfington for allowing our students into his business and showing them how to process pork. Just when you thought that was all, the food science class had one final cooking adventure. They would proceed to close out the year by making tamales by scratch.  Lourdes Lopez, our outstanding high school janitor, directed the proceedings and the students followed instructions. They cooked and shredded the meat, blended the sauce, kneaded the masa, washed the husks, filled and rolled tamales.  Then chopped veggies and  blended salsa. Lastly, they steamed the delicious, mouthwatering tamales. We would like to extend a special thank you to Ms.Lourdes for the professional guidance.

Monday, May 8th, Shattuck FFA hosted their annual FFA Banquet. There, the new officers would be announced for the 2023- 2024 school year. Those officers are, President Sydney Melton, Vice President Sadey Schoenhals, Secretary Olivia Quisenberry, Reporter Ezabela Herber, Treasurer Allyn Goodson, Sentinel Cindy Lara, Chaplain Madisen Sanchez-McDonald, and Ag Olympics Co-Chairmen Tate Charmasson & Josh Bay. Thank you to everyone who attended our banquet, and congratulations to the new chapter officers.

To close out the year, three junior boys traveled to Hartley, Texas on Saturday May 13 to compete in the  “Top of Texas Showdown.” Colten Jones placed 1st with his feed buggy, Jarek Fitz was 2nd and Reserve Division with his loading chute, and Josh Bay was 3rd with his aluminum popper. Together, the trio brought home a nice assortment of prizes. Congratulations to those guys.
